We offer the Lap-BandR system by Allergan.  For information on the product, go to www.lapband.com   All patients wanting to schedule an appointment to discuss the procedure are required to attend a patient information seminar and complete a series of pre-op evaluations before coming into the office for a consultation.  Evaluations include nutritional asessment, pychological evaluation, exercise tolerance evaluation, and medical clearance by your primary physician.  Contact our office to learn how to register for the next free informational seminar.

Am I a candidate for the procedure?
We follow the qualification guidelines established by the FDA, the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons.  All candidates must be 100 pounds overweight, have been obese for at least five years, have a Body Mass Index(BMI) of 40, or a BMI of 35 with significant obesity-related comorbidities.  All prospective banding patients must attend an educational seminar before coming to the office for a consultation with Dr. Melton.

How does the band work?
The Lap-BandR is an adjustable band that is placed with the laparoscope around the top of the stomach to reduce the amount of food you eat during meals by making you feel full faster.  The adjustable nature of the band makes it easy to customize your treatment based on your response to therapy.

Gastric banding has been shown to be equal to gastric bypass for weight reduction at 36 months after placement, with an average 40-80% reduction in excess body weight.  Weight loss is well-documented to reduce co-morbid conditions as noted below.
