Am I a candidate for the procedure? We follow the qualification guidelines established by the FDA, the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons.  All candidates must be 100 pounds overweight, have been obese for at least five years, have a Body Mass Index(BMI) of 40, or a BMI of 35 with significant obesity-related comorbidities.  All prospective banding patients must attend an educational seminar before coming to the office for a consultation with Dr. Melton.

How does the band work? The Lap-BandR is an adjustable band that is placed with the laparoscope around the top of the stomach to reduce the amount of food you eat during meals by making you feel full faster.  The adjustable nature of the band makes it easy to customize your treatment based on your response to therapy.
